Used for writing, drawing, printing, packaging...paper is an extremely important basis in our development as a species, contributing profoundly to our communication and personal expression. However, how many of us are aware of how it is produced, its particularities and virtuities? What options are available to us, as well as what will be the best role for our project? With this seminar we will be able to answer all these questions!

Marbled Paper, originally from the East, is a form of coloring and decoration of papers with the emergence of Suminagashi variants in Japan and later Ebru in Turkey. The technique starts from the incompatibility between oil and water. It consists of floating colors on the surface of a gelatinous liquid (aquatypia) and transferring them to another material, such as paper.

What are the characteristics of western letters that make them our lyrics?Surrounded by unspoken conventions, the history of writing is closely linked to the culture and technology that shaped it, from the earliest writing systems to the software we use today. The purpose of this module is to present a brief history of the development of western typography. Highlighting some details of key cultural (eg, the appearance of the paperback) and technological (eg Lumitype Photon) moments that have added, or modified, the way we draw and think letters. This module will start with an expository approach, followed by exploration and observation of historical examples and ending with a speculative design challenge.

Introduction to Calligraphy
School of Media Arts and Design
(Room to announce)

18:30h – 22:30h
From the Greek "beautiful" Kalli and "written" Graphe, the etymological root of the word Calligraphy sums up its essence. The harmony of forms and counterforms is guided by rules, but it is also marked by the relationship of the body with the work tool, and both with the support. From this premise, the workshop aims to present the principles of Calligraphy in Western writing, in which the participant will have the opportunity to start the practice of this art that maintains, since the history of writing, a structure of foundations for Typography.

Type design
School of Media Arts and Design
(Room to announce)

14:30h – 18:30h (both days)
The letters are all around us like the air we breathe. Invisible, mostly unaware of them and yet fundamental in our communication. In these two meetings, accompanied by the two guests mentioned, all participants will draw a font. Although this is a subject that normally becomes as invisible as it is well done, here we aim to free all participants to explore a display font, where they will have the freedom to do it well, well (!) noticed!

Typographic Poster
School of Media Arts and Design
(Room to announce)

18:30 – 22:30h
"Write it, cut it, paste it, save it, Load it, check it, quick, rewrite it, plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag and drop it, zip, unzip it, lock it, fill it, curl it, find it (...)" For this workshop the speed of execution will be promoted for the good understanding of the compositional space, the construction of forms and narratives. With digital and analog media, it’s intended that participants became aware to visual grammar where error will be forced, preconception of form will be ignored and exploring an typographic poster could be fun.

Public intervention
(Place to announce)
Intervention in the public space is fundamental for us. As in the following year, we attach great importance to sharing our club with the city, exposing where possible our typographic passions as well as the new ways that are linked to it. We will propose some mediums for intervention (wall, flag, object...) where everyone will participate in a collaborative execution that could include at some point the whole community.
Module 04

Open Week
& Exhibition
(Place to announce)
As well as the public intervention, we consider that the best way to finish the type club edition should be with a public exhibition, with music, beer and sun with everyone that contribute for the beautiful memories.
